Jaja Poppen
Empowering Art
Jaja holds a significant place in Curacaoan history, symbolizing the enslaved women who cared for the children of wealthy families. These women formed deep bonds with the children and acted as cultural bridges. Cleopatra Cunst’s workshop, honors the Jaja’s memory while celebrating the strength of today’s women. Each Jaja piece is meticulously handmade by local artist Judith Martha (1950). Stichting Bijzondere Vrouw extends this legacy as well by supporting female victims of violence, selling handcrafted items created by women and girls, with proceeds dedicated to their safety and empowerment.

By altering perceptions of the environment, Loaiza’s murals foster community engagement and exploration of local neighborhoods.
