JaJa Poppen
Symbolism and power in art:
Jaja plays an important role in Curacao's history, symbolizing the enslaved women who cared for the children of well-to-do families. These women built deep bonds and acted as cultural bridges. Cleopatra Cunst's studio honors the memory of the Jaja while celebrating the power of women today.
Each Jaja artwork is handcrafted by local artist Judith Martha (b. 1950). In addition, Special Woman Foundation is committed to helping women and girls who are victims of violence. Handmade products made by these women are sold to support their safety and empowerment.
What to expect:
- Handmade Jaja dolls with deeper meaning
- A tribute to the history and power of women
- Support female victims of violence
- Art and culture combined in a meaningful experience
